Zombie Walk Information
What is a “Zombie Walk?”
A zombie walk (also known as a zombie mob, zombie march, zombie horde or zombie lurch) is an organized public gathering of two or more people who dress up in zombie costumes. Usually taking place in an urban center, the participants make their way around the city streets in a somewhat orderly fashion and often limp drag or crawl their way towards a local cemetery or other public space.
Promoted primarily through word of mouth and online message boards, zombie walks are an underground activity. During the event participants are encouraged to remain in character as zombies and to communicate only in a manner consistent with zombie behavior. This may include grunting, groaning and slurred, moaning calls for ‘brains’. It should be noted that zombie behavior is a hot topic of debate. Purists who draw their definitions from the original Living Dead films will claim that a zombie would never have the ability to call for “brains” and furthermore that a zombie needs only living (or freshly killed) flesh for its sustenance and not the brain in particular.
A questionable technique that some use to heighten interest and “realism”, is the zombie mobs will actually “eat” victims to create new zombies, in sight of horrified onlookers.(possibly dangerous)However if your zombie mob establishes a route and an easily recognizable signal, so that participants can plant themselves as ‘civilians’ (ie not zombies yet) along the route in old tear able clothes, and as the mob shambles along it can continually discover and ‘devour’ new victims. As the zombies surround the newvictim to loudly “feed”, concealing him/her from witnesses view, they tear clothes and quickly apply gorey makeup, to create a new zombie, who then shambles along with the ever-expanding pack to find new victims.
Zombie walk advice
Unfortunately just because your dead does not make you exempt from state and local law enforcement. So here are a few things that every undead needs to know to ensure a safe and hassle free walk.
There is no leader. There is no one in charge. These walks are something that we come together as a group to form. If a law enforcement or city official (or any form of authority for that matter) stops you and ask who is in charge, the answer should always be “everyone”. Walking is not illegal, but sometimes one of the dead may violate the law and run the risk of the rest of the walk being shut down. This is something you should want to avoid. Some cities have ran into problems in years past so everyone is encouraged to be conscientious in their actions.
All walkers can NOT touch the living. This is simple. The reason for this is that under state law it can be considered assault. If it is a minor the charge can be much more serious. Believe it or not, you can also be charged with false arrest.
Traffic laws are also important. For instance jay walking. Unfortunately it is not uncommon for officers of the law to be lying in wait for you to make this simple mistake. It has happened on several occasions. Automobiles are another thing you need to avoid blocking. You can receive a ticket for impeding traffic. You can not walk in the street under any circumstances! In order to do so, YOU MUST retain a permit from the city as a “parade”. If you choose to walk in the street with out this permit you may receive a citation for impeding traffic.
The last thing that comes to mind are local businesses and store fronts. I know a lot of you get a kick out of banging on windows and all, but this has resulted in property damage during other walks in the past. Fake blood can permanently ruin window stencils and other things that are commonly found outside of local businesses. It is not entirely impossible to receive a citation or even a night in the clink for “malicious destruction of private property”.
We understand that these things may take some of the fun out of the walks, but we also want all of you zombies to be safe from both personal endangerment and persecution by law enforcement. We also can not enforce these guidelines. It is up to you to do your part to ensure that everyone has a safe and hassle free walk. Everyone walks at their own risk, so please don’t risk the safety and security of others.
